Thesis presentation and reading
As a general rule, the current regulations will apply: https://edoctorado.ucm.es/
-
The Doctoral Thesis must consist of original research work related to any of the research lines or fields of knowledge included in the Doctoral program in Data Analysis (Data Science).
-
The Doctoral Thesis must be written in Spanish and accompanied by an extensive summary in English, including at least the introduction, objectives, results, and conclusions of the thesis. If authorized by the Program’s Academic Committee, the thesis may also be written in another language commonly used for scientific communication in its field; in this case, it must include an extensive summary in Spanish. In all cases, the English summary is an essential requirement.
-
Doctoral Theses in "publication format" may be submitted. In the publications that make up the Thesis, the doctoral student must have participated as the main author, and they must have been published in journals of the specialty included in recognized quality indices or of a similar scientific level in books. The director and tutor of the doctoral student will certify the student’s contribution to the publications provided. The compilation of publications must always be accompanied by an introduction in Spanish, if the publications are in a different language, including a review of the current state of the topic, objectives and/or hypotheses, an integrative discussion, and the conclusions.
-
The quality of doctoral theses must be guaranteed by procedures established in doctoral programs, both in their preparation and in the evaluation process prior to their defense. These procedures must be public and known to the doctoral students and will be supervised by the competent quality authority at UCM.
-
The processing and defense of the Doctoral Thesis cannot take place until the academic year following the formal enrollment of the doctoral student in the Doctoral Program in which they will defend the Thesis.
-
Once the Doctoral Thesis is completed, with the approval of the director and tutor, the doctoral student will submit to the program’s Academic Committee two printed copies and one electronic copy. This committee will appoint two external experts with accredited experience to issue a report on the Thesis within a maximum period of one month, including recommendations that must be considered by the doctoral student in the final version. Processing for the thesis defense requires the completion of the corresponding documents and payment of the official examination fee.
-
The program’s Academic Committee will authorize or deny the processing of the Thesis within a maximum of fifteen working days from the receipt of the final version in the corresponding administrative unit. To decide on processing, the Academic Committee will take into account: the director’s report(s), the reasoned reports issued by external evaluators, the doctoral student’s activity document, and the quality criteria specific to the Doctoral Program.
-
If processing is authorized, the Academic Committee will: a) Prepare a justified proposal for the Tribunal. b) Forward to the Doctorate Committee for approval one printed copy and one electronic copy of the thesis along with all associated documentation: justified proposal for the Tribunal, evaluators’ reports, director(s) reports, documentation on the proposed Tribunal members, and the doctoral student’s activity document reviewed by the tutor and director.
-
Once the Thesis is received, the Doctorate Committee will make it publicly available so that other doctors may submit comments on its content. For this purpose, the Thesis must remain on public display for fifteen calendar days, and once this period has ended, the Doctorate Committee will appoint the Tribunal, if applicable, and authorize the defense of the Thesis.
-
If the program’s Academic Committee denies the processing of the thesis, it must communicate its reasoned decision to the doctoral student and the thesis director(s). Against the express decision of the program’s Academic Committee, the interested party may appeal to the Doctorate Committee within one month.
-
If the Doctorate Committee denies the processing of the thesis, it must communicate its reasoned decision to the doctoral student, the director(s) of the thesis, and the tutor. Against the express decision of the Doctorate Committee, the interested party may file an appeal with the Rector, which will exhaust the administrative channel.
